Getting Ready for Your New Hairpiece

If you have decided to invest in a custom hairpiece for the first time, congratulations! Custom pieces are the best way to give you that flawless look. And, as with everything, the better prepared you are to be fitted for your piece, the easier the process. Here are a few steps you can take to ensure a pleasant, productive road to your perfect hair.

1. Let it grow!
When you come in for your first visit, we take a hair sample and draw a map of your hairline.  A perfect hair sample is between 2 and 3 inches long. At this length, we will be able to match 100% human hair to your color and texture. If your hair is too short, you'll have to come back once your hair has reached the right length. Letting your hair grow in advance will allow us to map your hairline clearly and get a good hair sample.

2. Know your options.
Custom hair pieces are usually attached in one of two ways, bonding and tape. It is VERY important to know the differences between these two methods. While bonding (glue) allows the wearer to keep their hair attached for months at a time, the scalp can become irritated and sticky from nonstop wear. Surgical tape requires the wearer to take the piece off before sleeping and showering. Following the tape method not only extends the life of your piece by years, but is a much healthier option for your scalp. You can read our blog on bonding vs. tape for more information.

3. Keep your head clean.
A clean, dry scalp will hold tape securely all day, and sometimes for a second day,  depending on how much oil your skin produces. However, excess oil buildup and combined with the natural heat that your head produces will cause bonding glue and surgical tape both to become gummy and messy, with a much weaker hold. Our pieces have the lightest bases that are professionally ventilated. This allows your scalp to breathe and gives you the most comfortable fit. They also blend right in to your scalp, making it impossible to distinguish from your natural hair. Wash your scalp and your natural hair (not your piece!) daily.

4. Keep your hairpiece clean.
Remove used tape from your piece one it has lost its tackiness. Some people may be able to use the same tape for a second day if their scalp is kept very clean and does not produce much oil. Placing new tape directly over the used tape can cause a sticky buildup that slides around on the scalp. Changing your tape regularly will ensure a secure, comfortable hold each day and will also extend the life of your hair piece.

5. Take it to the cleaners.
Hair pieces require a gentler brand of care than natural hair. It can dry easily if washed frequently, and can also oxidize (takes on a yellowish hue) if exposed to shampoos with salts, or if frequently exposed to intense sunlight.  Avoid hairspray as well; it contains alcohol that severely dries out the hair. Brushing your piece will remove most dust particles that collect. We recommend that you bring your hair piece back to us every 3 months for a professional shampoo and re-styling. We use sulfate and salt-free shampoos that maintain the integrity of the hair. Regular cleanings will keep your piece in good shape for years to come.

I hope that these tips have helped you better prepare for your new hair piece. Sticking with these simple steps will help you extend the life of your hair piece, giving you a wonderful experience for years to come.

Tips for keeping your hairpiece in great shape during the summer

When the summer season arrives your hair replacement maintenance also has to change. Make sure you stay away from extended sun exposure as this causes the hair to oxidize. This gives the hair replacement an undesirable a yellowish tint. To slow down this process wear baseball caps when you know you are going to be out in the sun for a longer period of time. The baseball cap you buy should be 1-2 sizes larger. This prevents damage as well as bending in the hair replacement. Another good summer tip while dealing with hair replacement is to wash your scalp in the morning before applying the system. The increase in temperature causes the perspiration to increase making the tape less tacky, and decreases the overall cleanliness of the hair replacement.

Your insurance company may pick up your bill for your hairpiece purchase!

Did you know if you are someone who is dealing with alopecia, medical related balding or cancer related chemotherapy and/or radiation and need to wear a hair system, toupee, wig, or hairpiece, that your health insurance plan may cover the full cost.  You’ll be surprised to know that most insurance companies will cover between 80 - 100% of a “cranial prosthesis.”  Insurance companies are starting to realize the important role that cranial hair prosthesis plays in the life of someone suffering with the side effects of these medical conditions.

Here are a few tips that may help you figure out if you can go through your insurance and be reimbursed for your new purchase.
- When filing your claim, be sure to refer to your hair system as a cranial hair prosthesis
- Read over your policy and double check your coverage portion.
(Make sure your policy covers expenses for prosthesis or prosthetics)
- Request a prescription from your physician for your full or partial cranial prosthesis
- Check with your physician for details and referrals for proper specialists and procedures in the field
-Write a letter to your insurance company to clarify the necessity of your prosthesis
- Make sure you, your physician and your specialist fill out and sign all proper documents
- Be sure to keep personal copies of all your paperwork and invoices

Good Luck & Good Looking!

Partial Hair Replacement Systems

Partial hair replacement systems are designed specifically to cover a small balding area. This would commonly be used by someone who started to notice balding in either the temples or the crown of the head. The partial hair replacement can be designed using both fine welded mono as well as injected skin base. This hair system may be bonded as well as taped on depending on preference. As your balding area gets larger your partial is going to bet bigger as well, until you no longer need it and can switch over to a full front lace or injected skin system. Partial hair replacement systems can be created in any shape any size to fit your specific needs, this also makes it a great option for individuals looking to cover a specific area due to an accident or an illness such as Alopecia Areata.

Hair Loss Key Words

Here’s a few terms and meaning that you may come across while researching hair loss options.  A great aid for navigating through the world of hair replacements.

Hair Replacement
A general term for any procedure in which encroaching baldness is non-surgical or  surgically reversed by grafting, tightening, or flap rotations, using standard grafts, minigrafts, and micrografts, scalp flaps, scalplifting procedures, scalp reduction, and tissue expanders

Male Pattern Baldness
A progressive, diffuse loss of scalp hair in men that begins in the twenties or early thirties, depends on the presence of the androgenic hormone testosterone, and is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors. Also called alopecia hereditaria, androgenetic alopecia, male pattern alopecia, patterned alopecia.

Alopecia simply means hair loss (baldness).

Alopecia areata
is a condition that causes round patches of hair loss, and can lead to total hair loss.

Alopecia totalis is the loss of all head hair.

Alopecia universalis
is a medical condition involving rapid loss of all hair of the head and the body.

Bald/ Balding
having little or no hair on the scalp.

Hair transplantation
is a surgical procedure used to treat baldness or hair loss. Typically, tiny patches of scalp are removed from the back and sides of the head and implanted in the bald spots in the front and top of the head.

Hair graft
a thin strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed, separated into pieces of 1 to 5 hair follicles, and then implanted into hairless areas.
